CMASTE was formally called IONCMASTE (the Imperial Oil National Centre for Mathematics Science and Technology Education). There are still many legacy items distributed by CMASTE that were funded by the Imperial Oil Foundation. CMASTE and K-12 teachers remain indebted to the IOF for their support for past and current R & D projects. Thank you, Imperial Oil.

Funded byr: NSERC (www.nserc.gc.ca)

Background Information:

NSERC (the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council) has funded a five-year pilot program of five CRYSTALs (Centres for Research in Youth Science Teaching and Learning) across Canada. Some of the requirements from NSERC are:

    1. collaborative research by science and mathematics university professors and educators
    2. research involving graduate students and K-12 institutions, teachers and students
    3. research translation for K-12 personnel et al
    4. outreach to K-12 personnel et al

CRYSTAL Alberta has the following objectives.

    1. Research math and science reasoning as displayed in text and visuals used in K-12 classrooms.

    2. Develop prototypes to serve a models to promote math and science reasoning. These prototypes could be used by publishers, curriculum developers, classroom teachers, and outreach partners in math and science education. These prototypes would include

      1. resource prototypes (short examples to be used to stimulate the production of resources by others
      2. assessment prototypes (examples to assess the achievement of math and science reasoning outcomes)
      3. curriculum prototypes (sample outcomes that would promote math and science reasoning).
    3. Create an on-line resource centre for distributing the above prototypes and for promoting math and science reasoning.

For more information go to the CRYSTAL Alberta website.
